You are what you eat! Nevermind that unhealthy person that everyone knows that had no issues falling pregnant, and we use that as a cop out excuse, “if so and so got pregnant then I should have no problems”. Everyone is different, some people naturally fertile and some people might fall pregnant quickly out of sheer luck, you should never compare yourself to other people. However, you should focus on the things you can control and that is your diet! We live in a fast-paced world full of take away, processed foods and a lot of bad temptations that make it hard for a lot of us to keep that discipline.
What I have found is Smoothies, they are relatively easy to put together, they are extremely healthy and offer all the key ingredients that can help prepare your body for pregnancy. There is so many layers to good preparation for pregnancy which we take for granted and there is a lot of what if scenarios that we don’t have a crystal ball for, eg. Those eating healthy prior and during pregnancy, child is more likely to be born healthy, good immune system and arguably a higher brain function and ability to learn, will perhaps give them those extra IQ points as an adult.
There is a lot of fertility smoothies out there on the internet with precise recipes, I have never gone a set recipe myself, and it’s pretty hard to make a really bad smoothie, but the idea is to mix it up a little rotate your ingredients, so it’s not always the same each day, eg. Different berries, Different Leafy greens.
Some sites advise that your Leafy greens need to be steamed, their reason being that the body spends that extra time trying to process it and digest it rather than putting that bodies energy into egg production and the creation of great quality eggs. I think if you have the time and want to do that then sure it’s a good idea. However, if you don’t have the time, I still think it’s more beneficial then eating a particular junk food for example.
The rotation of Berries also and some sites say to limit them as Sugars can affect estrogen levels and affect fertility. My opinion on that is these fructose sugars are more easier for your body to process than processed sugars, so if you have a natural sweet tooth anyway and can eliminate the processed sugars you’re already doing much better by having fruit filled with your vitamin C’s, antioxidants. Ultimately, it’s all about balance, making something that isn’t a chore for you to consume.
If you have already been trying and struggling to fall pregnant, some sites suggest avoiding diary as it’s inflammatory food, other options to mix into your smoothie as liquid are almond milk, pomegranate juice, coconut milk, coconut water, organic whey protein. However there is conflicting information out there on this a Harvard study, found that women that consumed diary products improved their ovulation, which just showcases how much we still have to learn about fertility in a science field as a whole. You can even add ice cubes although the fun police also enforce to us that colder drinks take longer to digest robbing vital fertility production time.
Personally, I have seen firsthand the increase in my own fertility when I am regularly consuming smoothies, it is a very good starting point for improving your dieting habits for preparation in carrying a baby and great for donors also to improve their sperm quality, so donating also doesn’t become a demoralising chore without success.
My general rule of thumb is what is typically good for women is also good for men’s fertility. So, the following items below should accommodate both sexes needs, despite me focusing on some particular elements of one sex needs over the other, so excuse me for that. If you have a Naturopath or Fertility specialist that has recommended any superfoods to add to your smoothie would love to hear from you, this list has been compiled by previous fertility specialist advice given to our members.
